THE BLACK NARCISSUS

Fred M. White

(1859-19??)

Although it is easy to find biographical material about such authors as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and G. K. Chesterton, unearthing information about authors with shorter writing careers presents a challenge. Hundreds of authors writing for the literary magazines of the day left little to know about themselves save for their bylines. So it is with Fred Merric White. We do know that White, an Englishman, was primarily a writer of science fiction, although he wrote several fine detective stories as well, including novels Craven Fortune (1908), The Mystery of the Ravenspurs (1912), and the following tale.

What is so special about a black narcissus? Before the days of modern plant breeding, black flowers were rare and much sought after. Black is not a color nature chooses for flowers, since it doesn’t attract insects and other pollinators. The black flowers on the market today have been created by plant breeders who begin with blue, red, or purple flowers. If a flower such as the fictional black narcissus truly existed, it might indeed inspire the kind of crime told in the following tale!
